A Vegan Guide to Eating in Vancouver

The future of food! The Plant Based train has taken off and it's gaining momentum. It wasn't long ago that the Naam was the only spot in town to get a vegan meal. Today, plant forward restaurants are everywhere. You can even find vegan offerings at your most traditional dining spots. Here it is: We share our favourite restaurants and cafes for vegan food in Vancouver!

Mt. Pleasant / Riley Park / Fraser St.

The Juice Truck

Vancouver and (Canada’s) original Cold Pressed Juice Bar. Launched originally as a food truck, The Juice Truck has since evolved into a plant-based lifestyle business, with storefronts in Mount Pleasant, Yaletown and Steveston (in addition to the original mobile truck and a smoothie cart downtown). They offer everything from smoothies and salads, to treats and even Vegan Soft Serve (at their Yaletown location). If you can’t make it to one of their stores… good news! The Juice Truck team recently launched their first book with Penguin Random House sharing all of their trade secrets and recipes! The Juice Truck also has locations in Gastown, Yaletown, at Burrard and Robson and in Steveston.

The Acorn

The leaders of the pack in plant forward, creative cuisine in Vancouver. This cozy corner spot has been celebrated locally and internationally, and for good reason! Their menu changes with the seasons and is always pushing the paradigm of vegetarian and vegan dining. Their Kale Caesar is a staple, and is always a good place to start! Save this spot for a special occasion or hit up their amazing brunch on the weekend.

Chickpea

Chickpleaasse! Holy hummus. This family friendly spot has a wide variety of Middle Eastern-based comforts, from a whole hummus menu to chickpea fries, to the tastiest latkes in town. Their brunch is also not to be missed. The Malawach (puffed pastry pancake stuffed with goodness) is better than words can describe! They also have a food truck, so check them out online to find out where their truck will be rolling too next.

The Arbor

Vegan comforts where everybody knows your name. The Arburger is the vegan answer to a Big Mac. Honourable mentions go to the broccoli popcorn, fried oysters and the artichoke nuggets… we could go on and on. The Southern Fried Artichoke Sandwich is what deep fried vegan dreams are made of! They also have a great happy hour and selection of local craft beers- not to mention a garden patio in summer (a hot commodity in Vancouver)!

The Wallflower

Something for everyone: vegan, gluten free, etc. The Wallflower specializes in the classic comforts veganized. From Huevos Rancheros and scrambles for brunch, to burgers and pasta and much, much more.

Ahn and Chi

Lunch and dinner, people are lined up for Ahn and Chi’s amazing Vietnamese food and atmosphere! Get there early to ensure a table or plan to adventure around Main Street for a drink or some shopping in the meantime. It’s worth the wait either way- The Om Bowl and The Cari Chay are musts!

Budgies Burritos

This Mt. Pleasant neighbourhood favourite summed up: burrito heaven in a unique space! Super filling and well priced. This is the place for plant based, big portions on a budget. Try the Jamedog or The Henry….or just try them all. You can’t go wrong! Make sure to grab a locally-produced Dickie’s Ginger soda as well.

Friendly

Situated right on Main street, this super cute all-vegan dessert and snack bar is a must for every sweet tooth in town. They carry local, vegan ice cream company, Say Hello Sweets, tons of baked goodies (try their vegan pop tart), Zimt Chocolates, and lots of wholesome healthy smoothies in addition to killer lunches and snacks. Try the avocado toast with mango salsa- yum!

Cartems Donuts

This is THE spot in town to get out-of-this world vegan donuts. Though not everything is vegan, their selection of vegan and GF options is extensive. Out of all the different donut places I've been to around the world, Cartems is still my (Stephanie’s) favourite. They do seasonal flavours every month, so definitely check those out, but perennial favourites are the Earl Grey, or any of their stuffed donuts. They also have locations in Kits and Downtown.

MeeT

MeeT now has multiple locations in Vancouver- on Main, Yaletown and in Gastown. This is the ultimate vegan comfort/junk food spot. With everything from beer battered onion ring burgers, mac and cheese, gravy fries, and rich desserts, this is a great place to bring your meat eating friends and family since they likely won’t tell the difference!

East is East

This incredible restaurant hands-down serves the best homemade chai tea ever, and the smell of the spices and aromas permeates the air so that you walk out smelling like Chai (in the best way possible). But aside from that, the moment you enter, you feel like you've stepped into a spiritual nest. There’s a huge selection of different curries, dahl, tabouli salads, soups, roti rolls, and more- all inspired by the Silk Route region. Not everything is vegan but they have tons of vegan options such as the delicious new mushroom eggplant curry or the vegetable kofta curry. Definitely save this restaurant for special occasions or to go see their live music and flamenco dancing (dancing only on weekends at the Main St. location). They have a second location in Kits.

Blue Heron Creamery

This 100% plant based creamery serves up much more than the average shredded soy material that vegan “cheese” used to be. The products on offer range from true cultured cheeses, yogurts, and butters to preserves. The texture and taste of these fine cheeses are truly superior to anything on a traditional cheese board! This brand-new Main St. shop is only open on Saturdays from 12-5pm for the time being- prepare to potentially wait in line since these products are so in demand! Make sure to try the fig coco-chevre, hazelnut asiago, and the smoky cashew cheddar. Run, don’t walk!

Gluten Free Epicurean

Gluten-intolerant folks unite! And head straight for this charming bakery in the heart of Fraserville. In addition to mouth-watering fresh baked goods, there’s also pizza, sandwiches, smoothies, and more to dig in to. Make sure to try a raspberry almond cinnamon bun or the paleo vegan ice cream sandwiches!

The General Public Sushi Lodge

Located smack dab in the middle of trendy Main St, the General Public is pretty hard to miss with it’s pumping music and crazy decorations. This modern sushi bar has some of the most inventive sushi rolls you can find in Vancouver, in addition to lots of fun appetizers and cocktail specials. There’s a full veggie sushi menu with lots of vegan and gluten free options, so make sure to order lots to share!

Matchstick

Known for their coffee, Matchstick has some amazing vegan offerings. From salads to toasts to their baked goods... We'd like to emphasize the baked good! The Cardamom Cinnamon Bun is addictive. It's impossible to not eat at least two. Their vegan Power Muffins and Mixed Berry Scones are worth the trip as well. They have additional locations in Riley Park, Chinatown and in Yaletown.

JJ Bean

An early pioneer to offer vegan options at their cafes around town. Their muffins are some of the best in the city and they also have banana bread, cookies and wraps that are all plant based. The Very Berry and Chocolate Zucchini are our go to choices!

North Vancouver

The Workshop Vegetarian Cafe

Worth the drive every time! Located in the industrial area of Capilano in North Van, this gem delivers the veggie goods. Their vegan ramen and noodle bowls are next level- try the squash or mushroom based bowls for some seriously delicious comfort food. Also worth mentioning: they have the best vegan cinnamon buns- possibly in the whole world!

Buddha-Full

Buddha-Full is an all-vegan cafe with 2 locations in North Vancouver. It's a super trendy spot with lots of Buddha + acai bowls, smoothies, avo toast, and sweets. Make sure to give this spot a try for an energy boost on your way to all the adventures that await on the North Shore!

Café by Tao

Cafe Tao is an all organic, raw, vegan restaurant in North Van owned by the loveliest mother - daughter duo. They have a huge outdoor patio seating, and offer tons of raw granola, cakes, parfaits and more sold to go. Everyone who I've ever taken here always raves about the Mesquite Pudding, it’s truly the most healthy delicious superfood raw dessert I've had in Vancouver! Their raw wraps are also not to be missed: they have kelp noodles, avocado, and tons of flavour jam packed!

Bluhouse Market & Cafe

We love this place. One stop shop for healthy food and healthy shopping. Their market place is stocked full with local produce and local artisanal goods and their cafe has a tasty menu boasting smoothies, bowls, crepes sandwiches and much more!

Wild Trails Coffee

They are 100% vegan, zero waste, organic coffee shop with wraps, smoothies and sandwiches. They make all their syrups in house and it's probably the only place in the city you can get a pumpkin latte in the middle of the Summer.

East Van

CHAU Veggie Express

One of our most regular go to spots for vegan eating in town. We could eat here everyday. Full flavours, clean ingredients and amazing variety. The Golden Temple Soup is our favourite but ask us tomorrow and it could just as easily be every other item on the menu. Make sure to get a Chocolate Hazelnut Praline Bar for dessert. You should probably get one of their house made vegan ice creams while you're there too!

The Black Lodge

This is the ideal place to come for a cozy winter drinks and comfort food (or summer post-work hangs)! The interior is decorated on theme with the cult classic TV show Twin Peaks, so it’s got a real cool Pacific North-West campy vibe to it. The menu is made of pub classics- but all vegetarian and vegan! Swing by here for some “chicken” wings and a pint of local craft beer. They have a second location in Mount Pleasant.

Po Kong

When that Chinese food craving hits, this is the place to go! Come here for traditional Chinese cuisine, but without the meat. The hot & sour and wonton soups are amazing. If you’re feeling under the weather, try their many options of congee (rice porridge) for a comforting pick-me-up.

Green Lettuce

Hot darn… this home-style restaurant hits the spot for full time flavour awards. Indian-Chinese cuisine is an unlikely fusion that tastes as good as it sounds. Take the adventure down Kingsway and be sure to go with a group as there's a good chance you’re going to want to order one of everything!

What's Up? Hot Dog!

“In dog we trust” is the motto of this punk rock party spot dedicated to delicious and fun grub with tons of vegan options. If you’ve cut out meat but missing the delicious saucy-ness of chicken wings, come here for their vegan wing nights on Mondays for cheap wings with tons of fancy sauces to choose from. But of course don’t miss the jumbo veggie dogs with a wide range of toppings like fried mushrooms and onions, wasabi, and sriracha mayo. Fun!

House of Dosas

HOD is a cheerful east-side favourite dishing out crispy rolled crepes (dosas) with an assortment of yummy fillings. Dosas are a popular Southern Indian dish and there is a whole vegetarian menu with several vegan options. Try out the eggplant, cauliflower, or mixed veg dosa for a flavourful lunch!

Lotus Seed

Wow- this is seriously vegan heaven! Lotus seed is a health and spiritually conscious vegan restaurant in Vancouver, focusing on local and organic ingredients. The menu is a healthy vegan’s dream- featuring inventive burritos, meatless ball sandwiches, pho, almond alfredo spaghetti, and vegan sushi! Definitely make the trek to southeast Vancouver for this place. Cheerful food in a cheerful setting! They have a second location in Fairview.

Aleph

Opening just this year, Aleph has caused a buzz in Vancouver with its stunning setting in East Van. The décor is fresh and simple with nods to the Middle Eastern influences that are reflected on the menu.  Come for Mediterranean brunch or for a delicious dinner, and make sure to try the “saj” bread made in a special oven, or the turmeric roasted cauliflower and the Persian herby lentil rice.

Roots and Fruits

Vancouver locals with a finger on the new vegan spots are likely to know this café based on one particular dish seen many times on Instagram: the carrot “lox” toast, which is essential to try! However, this Strathcona eatery focusing on local and seasonal food has a lot more on the menu: think beet poke bowls, a southwestern dish made with walnut cauliflower meat, and smoked tofu salad rolls.

Vegan Pizza House

The first all vegan pizza restaurant in Vancouver, Vegan Pizza House has been an east-side favourite since 2011. Note that the menu has much more than just pizza- there’s also dishes like donair, lasagna, and a variety of pastas. This is a great place for a simple, casual meal with family who might not be ready to give up on pizza nights!

Chomp Vegan Eatery

One of the pioneers in vegan food in Vancouver. Try their baked Mac'n Cheesy for some soul nourishing comfort food. They also offer custom meal plans with home delivery if you're looking for something healthy and convenient!

Fairview / South Granville / Cambie

Shizen Ya

Say it out loud a few times… rolls off the tongue. Shizen Ya is a Japanese restaurant that kills it with their healthy plant-based options. Their brown rice sushi rolls, bowls, curries and specials are all next level. The flavours are clean, fresh and full of flavour. They also have a unique offering of holistic teas that are worth getting, plus make sure to save room for their vegan pudding and ice cream! They also have a downtown location.

3G Vegetarian

3G is one of the most underrated and hidden veg restaurants in town. They're a vegetarian Chinese restaurant with a husband and wife team running it. They are both plant based because of their Buddhist beliefs and two of the most humble sweet people I've ever met. If you love Dim Sun aka Yum Cha, 3G is the place to go. They have a huge selection of steamed buns (sweet and savoury), "chicken" sticky rice, bean curd in black bean sauce (the most delicious thing ever), "shrimp" Dumplings, "BBQ" buns, and so much more- you'll most likely get overwhelmed and want to order everything!

Heirloom

Eating at Heirloom can always guarantee a delectable vegetarian or vegan meal. Definitely save this place for a special occasion- either brunch with friends or a special dinner out. Their large and varied menu features many local farms and every dish is mouthwatering! Try out the vegan Caesar salad with beet chips, the sweet and sour cauliflower appetizer, and the tofu benedict for brunch. They also recently opened up in West Vancouver and will be opening soon on Main Street.

Benkei Ramen

Who doesn't love ramen? Their Vegan Black Ramen is crave worthy. Benkei vegetable broth with rich black sesame miso and drizzled with coconut milk and roasted black pepper. It's a challenge to get through typing that without wanting to go get vegan ramen!

Kitsilano

Turf

Turf is such a unique spot nestled on 4th avenue in Kitsilano. Not only is it a plant based (vegetarian with many vegan options as well) cafe with the most delectable food and bakery items, it's also an exercise studio, and retail spot with many special items on offer. Don’t miss the "ricotta" toast or quinoa cakes, and their  walnut milk adaptogen lattes are renowned around Vancouver. They also have a super bomb vegan chocolate cake, which is the perfect snack or dessert!

Edible Flours

Edible Flours is an all-natural vegan bakery. They have tons of gluten and soy-free options, and they use high-quality ingredients like organic unbleached flour, unrefined sweeteners, and natural food colourings. My favourites are their cinnamon rolls, nanaimo bars, and cupcakes. They also do custom Celebration cakes so if you want a beautiful vegan cake made for an occasion definitely give them a ring.

Olive and Ruby

Olive and Ruby is the cutest family owned cafe in Kitsilano. They have the most beautifully designed walls (one being a live plant wall) and a swing you can sit in: basically a very aesthetically pleasing and instagrammable spot! In addition, their food is just delicious. One menu highlight is their caprese toast: sourdough with a cashew spread, balsamic drizzle and some fresh veggies- and it honestly tastes like pizza to me! Fun fact: the name of the owners daughters are Olive and Ruby, how cute is that?

The Naam

The Naam is a vintage vegetarian spot in town and is a local classic. It's open 24 hours (I know, how cool is that?!) so they're always eager to serve you awesome food anytime of the day or night! It's a funky spot on West 4th in Kits, and is a great place to go for comfort food or for wholesome simple meals with GIANT portions! They do brunch as well, serving up great pancakes, tofu scrambles, and more. Don’t miss: sitting on the garden patio, and the sesame fries with the famous miso gravy (you can bring a bottle home with you).

Tera V Burger

If you're ever in the mood for a delicious juicy burger, but without the animal cruelty, head straight to Tera V! Their famous original Bull Burger tastes just like beef, and is loaded with veggies, vegan mayo and ketchup- truly a higher vibe version of McDonalds. Their fiesta tempeh burger is delicious and a great option for those who don't like the taste of mock meat. Note: the fries are thin, light, salty and delicious so definitely order a side of them! Also save room for dessert- they have these amazing chocolate cookie sprinkle sandwiches, and a red velvet cheesecake that's pretty dang delicious!

Nuba

Nuba is a bustling Lebanese spot with 4 locations in town. They have quite a few veg options and delicious hummus and baba ghanooj. One of their most unique flavourful dishes is their famous Najib's crispy cauliflower tossed with a lemon. A few of their other popular veg items include their falafels, red lentil soup, stuffed eggplant, and vegan stew. They have specials that switch up quite a bit, often including fresh juices and cocktails as well! You can also find Nuba in Mt. Pleasant, Downtown on Davie and in Gastown.

Be Fresh

Be Fresh Local Market is a grocer/café/smoothie bar cultivated by the sustainability-minded grocery delivery company SPUD. There are a few locations around Vancouver, and each is a beautiful space offering mostly local and organic produce and retail goodies in addition to healthy meals made by the Be Fresh kitchen. So whether you’re heading in for some veggies or maybe to sit for a coffee or grabbing a lunch to go, it’s a place you can definitely feel good about going! They have a second location in Kits and another two locations downtown.

Dharma Kitchen

This delightful all-vegan spot is painted bright blue from the outside, and on the inside offers up “the food of mindfulness”.  Cooking based on the Buddhist principle of dharma, this food will nourish your body, mind and soul. You can get your veggie fix with delicious brown rice bowls, tofu or potato based bowls, and tempeh burgers. There is also a daily special for great value, and a “tea and study” time from 2-6pm, where you can get some chai and vegan rice pudding for $6. This place is not to be missed.

Pitchfork

Lunch, dinner or brunch, Pitchfork has got you covered. There full menu is vegetarian / vegan so there are tons of options to choose from. Herbed squash and cauliflower fritters with house-made jerk vegan mayo? Yes please! Their menu has a great variety, so plan your follow up visit soon.

Sejuiced

Healthy, fresh and delicious. One of the first healthy food cafes in Vancouver, Sejuiced has amazing sandwiches, wraps, salads, bowls, juices and smoothies. The Yogi Bowls are our favourites.

Downtown / West End

Yew

If your in the mood for something a little upscale head to Yew at the Four Seasons. They have a full vegan menu... you just have to ask for it. The roasted tofu with morel mushrooms is something seriously special, along with the vegan bulgogi and tempura vegetables. The menu is always rotating seasonly. There’s something for everyone here at this stylish spot!

Body Energy Club

Vancouver’s ultimate pre/post workout destination! Besides the vast array of protein powders, supplements, herbal remedies and superfoods, BEC is best known for their super tasty smoothie menu. They also carry food made by The Juice Truck kitchen in addition to other super healthy grab n’ go dishes. Try out a maca rush smoothie blended with a cold brew coffee shot and make sure to thank me later. They have multiple locations including two downtown, in Kits, in Gastown, off of Cambie and more in the suburbs.

Indigo Age

Indigo Age is a raw vegan cafe in the heart of downtown. Besides the healthy and yummy menu, the highlight of this underrated spot is their delicious and fun raw vegan High Tea! They serve tons of raw cakes, treats, and little bites, so it's a special thing to do with family or friends.

Earls

You know change is happening when Vancouver staples like Earls are making moves in the plant based community. They've launched a full plant based menu at their test kitchen on Hornby as well as at their brand new location in West Van. They put the time into doing it right as well... the menu is mouth watering good!

Jinya Ramen

It's definitely a challenge to find vegan ramen in this city. Lucky for us, Jinya offers up a “spicy creamy” vegan ramen option loaded with veggies, tofu, garlic chips and thick noodles. Come here when going out to eat with non-vegans for a delicious alternative ramen experience! They have a second location in Kerrisdale.

Lucha Verde

If you’re looking for inventive small plates with Mexican flavour as well as ambiance, make a beeline to Lucha Verde in the buzzing West End neighbourhood. This trendy spot serves up some of the best mole you can buy in addition to corn fritters, guac, and tasty taco combos with fillings such as spicy tempeh and Portobello. They also have delicious bar specials that change all the time, such as prickly pear margaritas!

Vegan Pudding Co.

Vegan custard pudding. Ahmen! The Roasted Black Sesame Pudding is our favourite but it's worth trying them all. These puddings are amazing made from kabocha squash and coconut milk. Ask them about how their pudding all started with poetry. Its a great story. Rich like whole milk, Smooth like raw silk, Looks like golden yolk... but VEGAN!

Yaletown

Zend Conscious Lounge

Zend is a predominantly raw, conscious lounge and kava bar. They're the only place in Canada that serves Kava! The shots are delicious and relaxing, but the taste is not for everyone. Besides that, they have such delicious, high-vibe healthy food. Their raw wrap and raw nut cheese platter are just incredible, as well as the buckwheat pancakes.  Make sure to note that they’re open from Wednesday-Sunday!

House Special

Fresh, full flavour Vietnamese food. A Veggie packed Vegan Pho and Vermicelli are just a few of the many options at this Yaletown hub. This is something you might want to eat on the daily, its so good. It really hits the spot on an overcast, rainy day when you need a meal that will warm you from the inside out!

Commercial Drive

Eternal Abundance

This cute little cafe/grocery store is on Commercial Drive, a really unique and vibrant part of town in Vancouver. They've got smoothies, breakfast, raw burgers, and sandwiches that are made on their infamous raw onion bread, in addition to raw cakes, ice cream sandwiches, and more in their dessert case. And as for their grocery section, they've got tons of great produce, and the most high quality fragrant spices I've ever come across in Vancouver.

Harambe

If you’ve never had authentic Ethiopian food before, you’re in for a treat! The dish to order here is a giant pancake called Injera (which is naturally vegan since it’s made out of fermented teff grains and water). Then, order the vegetarian combination platter where all sorts of delicious veggie mixtures are added on top of the injera in different sections. You rip the pancake with your hands and sop up all the delicious fresh flavours, and then eventually you’ll roll out of the place onto Commercial Drive with a really happy belly. Enjoy!

Jam Jar

Offering up “Folk Lebanese food”, Jam Jar is a local favourite that is definitely NOT to be missed! Make sure to get a veg tasting menu shared with your dining partner, which includes a sampler of all the varieties of delicious homemade hummus. Save room for dessert because the vegan chocolate rice pudding is ridiculous!

Bandidas Taqueria

Bandidas is a Commerical Drive institution- despite being all vegetarian, I know many meat eaters to claim this as one of their favourite restaurants in Vancouver! The atmosphere is lively and casual- and the burritos, enchiladas, and tacos are simply some of the tastiest (and largest portions) in town. They often host DJ’s and community events as well, so make sure to check it out!

Café Deux Soleil

This is another classic Commercial Drive hotspot for veggie heads, artists, musicians, poets, and the general public alike. The extensive vegetarian/vegan menu has brunch as well as lunch and dinner, and there is a full calendar of events that happens in this funky, lofty space. The veggie burgers and open mic nights are certainly not to be missed!

Sula

One of the best spots for vegan Indian food in Vancouver. They deliver the goods. Full of spice and flavour and everything you want in a delicious Indian meal. A lot of Indian restaurants are full of vegetarian options that often include ghee or dairy but at Sula they have a ton of options that are plant based!

They also have some incredible vegan ice cream that you can get in a cone or as an ice cream sandwich. Be sure to check out their weekend brunch as well and try out some breakfast pizzas, tacos, nutella banana calzones, and breakfast sandwiches. Now with a second location in Wesbrook Village at UBC, you can get your fix in on a regular basis!

Harvest Community Foods

Harvest Community Foods has a great backstory- people in the community got to vote on the purpose of the empty space and decided on a local food grocer offering healthy local selections as well as a farm box subscription. Harvest also has fresh food and a seating area where you can chow down on delicious vegan ramen and salads while watching the people of Chinatown go by. Check it out!

Kokomo

When Vancouver rain has you down- head to Kokomo! Don’t miss the beautiful décor, adaptogen lattes, and healthy salads. They know have a second location in the heart of Kits as well!

Umaluma

Vancouver’s first dairy free, plant based gelateria definitely lives up to the hype! After opening last summer, Umaluma has gained a fan following mainly due to insane flavours such as drunken cherry and seafoam caramel. Guide to Cycling in Vancouver: Steph Corker Style

When I first moved from Toronto to Vancouver, I realized that everyone raced across the city on two wheels (or two feet!). I was hooked into this West Coast vibe and couldn’t get a bike fast enough. So, I made my first bike purchase from a pro triathlete (goals!) and took it to Bicicletta for a fitting, who ended up being my first bike sponsor. From super newbie to super ambitious, my relationship with my bicycles proves to be very exciting! Except: being a newbie was undeniably an overwhelming process, especially shopping for “all of the things” that go with getting a bike...

Water bottles.

High socks.

Bike shoes and cleats.

Tools and (chain) lube.

Outfits! (And questions like: do you wear underwear with a chamois?!)

#whaaaatisthissport?!

here is what I carry in my jersey on a ride!

Here is what I carry in my jersey on a ride!

Anyway, it’s been a long-lasting love affair. In the spirit of sharing the love, here are my top 4 rides for all different cycling levels:

  1. The Beginner Buddy

Distance: 15 - 20km

You're chasing the sunset and only have an hour to kill – definitely hit Stanley Park. One loop is 10km and it’s a beauty. But keep your eye out for cars and horses! Especially the cars filled with people coming in and out of the park and gawking out at second beach! If you are lucky, you will find a buddy also doing a lap of the park and your 10km ride will turn into a 20km..or 30km ride before you know it! (We call that: bonus miles!)

  1. The Casual Hobbyist

Distance: 30 - 45km

This is my bro, Matt’s ride from Vancouver to Steveston, and the best way to get the full Juice Truck experience. Take the bike path down Ontario and stop to hydrate up at The Juice Truck Steveston location.

If you want to incorporate some hills into your ride, Richmond via UBC is the way to go. Hill repeats on Spanish Banks? Don’t mind if you do!

  1. The Weekend Warrior

Distance: 50 - 80km

  1. My favourite local climb is undeniably Cypress Mountain. You can go for the first look out or all the way to the top! You can hit cruise control all the way up or put in some punchy efforts with a set like: 5-8x (2min hard/ 2min easy) -- easy is never so easy when you are climbing a mountain.
  2. My second option is Horseshoe Bay via Marine Drive. It is beautiful and perfectly rolling to keep you honest. Zip out to Whytecliff Park or even up to Lion’s Bay on a gorgeous day, because #bonusmiles.
  1. The Ride or Die

Distance: 100 - 180km

Option 1: Vancouver to Whistler. Stay the night and make it a quick weekend getaway!

Option 2: Vancouver to Squamish. Stop at Zephyr Cafe for a tasty veggie meal and make the ride back down.

Option 3: The Triple Crown. Three local mountains - Cypress, Grouse, and Seymour.

ProTip#1: For these rides, have approximately 1 bottle of fluid per hour (I’m biased: i highly suggest F2C hydration products!) and some calories to go along with it. If real food is your kick, a banana or Prima bar are great choices. If you’d rather some chemicals, then GU makes it easy to digest gels. #fuelmatters

ProTip#2: This ride is beautifully hilly -- and the only way to get stronger on the climbs is to relax your shoulders and keep!climbing! I promise if you just ...keep...riding you will get to the top and be stronger for it.

If it’s raining?

It rains here a lot. We know.

And if riding in the rain is your thing, awesome!

Another option is indoor cycling and there are great places including Method and TaG. My newfound favourite indoor ride is on my trainer in my office, so rain or shine, there is no reason to miss a ride!

--

When it comes to cycling routes here in this beautiful city we gratefully call home, there are options for everyone! Everyday is a chance to discover a new route and I will never stop finding them. Next stop: find a start line -- Penticton GranFondo or GranFondo Whistler are two awesome races in beautiful BC.

(Spoiler: my favorite accessory to a bike ride is actually...my coach! Because with a coach comes direction, feedback, more belief in what I can do and more education on how I can do it better. Consider this a plug for my lifeline known as B78 Coaching!)

The Top Health and Wellness Trends for 2018

2018: The year Plant Based everything went mainstream! From celebrities and athletes going vegan to new definitions of what to expect from the food world. Does milk have to come from a cow? Does cheese have to come from dairy? Do eggs have to come from chickens? This is the year where the world gets a little more plant friendly and social activism becomes the norm! Last year we predicted that adaptogens, cold showers, intermittent fasting, minimalism and mushrooms would all be big.

Scroll down to see what we feel is going to be the buzz in health and wellness.

Health and Wellness Trends for 2018

Plant Based Everything

From Kyrie Irving to Will.i.am, athletes and celebs are leading the plant based movement. 2018 is the year of the plants! For the longest time Veganism lived in the fringes but with companies like Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods at the forefront, you can now find burgers that taste, look, and smell like meat but are made entirely of plants. The future of meat is meatless and dairy is going cow free! Nut based cheeses like Miyokos and Kite Hill have been making waves with major retailers but we’ve got some local hot shots here in Vancouver with Blue Heron CreameryPulse and Black Sheep. Plant Based Butchers like The Very Good Butcher and YamChops will be changing the conversation of what to expect from your local butcher. Stores like Vegan Supply are stocking up on goods like ribs, bacon and pulled pork from Plant Base. All of your meaty needs without compromising flavour and texture, and most importantly without harming any animals! Plant Based living is going beyond the plate from fashion to cosmetics. Look out for plant based everything in 2018!

CBD Oil

Go Green! The Marijuana plant is abundant in its health benefits, from the all mighty hemp seed to Mary Jane herself. CBD oil is the next big marijuana trend. CBD is a non psychoactive part of the plant… aka, it’s not going to make you high. However it can help chronic pain and inflammation, anxiety, sleep and nausea…just to name a few of the many benefits. Fleurs Tea, Hemp Hydrate and Grind Bar are a few of the brands bringing CBD to the mainstream.

Activism for Everyone

In 2018 everyone holds a social responsibility. We are all activists. From #metoo to #blacklivesmatter we saw activism take the mainstage in 2017. This is only the beginning. Equal rights for all beings, people, animals and nature alike is becoming more and more a point of how we identify with our values and purpose. Gone are the days of activists being fringe or alternative. 2018 is the year that everyone becomes an activist. So find your calling and be part of the change!

Zero Waste

If Captain Planet was still airing, he would be telling us to commit to a zero waste lifestyle. Bulk and reusable are in and the world is a happier place because of it. With plastic islands the size of Texas floating through the ocean and packaging for everything we can all work harder to reduce our footprint. Check out NADA and The Soap Dispensary and get down with that Zero Waste lifestyle.

Tai Chi

Yoga's cool cousin. Bruce Lee, Doctor Strange and Yoda all championed the benefits of Tai Chi. Think meditation in movement or martial arts meets yin yoga. Good for the mind, body and soul. This ancient practice is making its way back into the mix. All good things come back around and who doesn't want to practice their chi like Bruce Lee!

Non-Toxic Beauty

If you wouldn’t eat it… you shouldn't put it on your face! Natural beauty is the new organic food and it makes sense... our skin is our largest organ. If we care about what we’re putting in our mouths, it’s only logical to care about what we’re putting on our skin. Don't forget to look out for beauty products that don’t test on animals while you're at it! Harlow Skin Co, Woodlot and K'pure are a few brands to check out.

Ethical Fashion

Similar story…different medium. Across the board, it’s all about transparency. Where does your clothing come from and what is the impact of our consumer choices? Vegan fashion is making some major strides. Gone are the days where leather has to come from an animal. Matt and Nat has some incredible options. We’ve seen leather products made from pineapples and mushrooms. Anything is possible! Check out ARC Apparel, Nicole Bridger, Everlane and Patagonia. lululemon also recycles and reuses everything that doesn’t get sold. That’s pretty cool in our books.

Instant Pot

Topping off Martha Stewart's wish list, this years cooking sensation the Instant Pot. An old classic has found its way again. Millennials have taken a liking to Instant Pot cooking making it the modern way to make dinner again! Search #instapot on Instagram to see what all the craze is about!

Moringa

Every year a new ‘superfood’ makes it big. This year everyone will be wanting more Moringa! It’s a name that rolls off the tongue. Moringa is every bit worth the attention too. It’s packed with vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. It’s a good source of vitamin A, C, and E; calcium; potassium; and protein. It's also an antioxidant that helps fight those free radicals and it helps prevent inflammation. We could go on and on… but trust us, Moringa is something every smoothie maker should have in their cupboard. You can get a high quality Moringa from us in store or online.

Pine Pollen

Our favourite supplement to make it into the limelight. Pine Pollen is here to stay. Some say it’s the new maca. Pine Pollen is libido boosting and is an incredible source of plant based testosterone, great for balancing hormones and for getting a little extra boost for your exercise regime. For those in the baby market, it also boost fertility. It’s adaptogenic so it will cater to exactly what your body needs and treat areas of distress. Pine Pollen is packed with Vitamins A, B-Carotene, B1, B2, B3, B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin D, and Vitamin E and full of minerals like Calcium, Copper, Iron, Manganese, Magnesium, Molybdenum, Phosphorous, Potassium, Selenium, Silicon, Sodium, and Zinc. One more plus: Pine Pollen contains over twenty amino acids and all eight essential amino acids! That makes it a complete protein! Basically… a little shake of pine pollen in your daily smoothie or tea is good for just about everyone. You can get it at our store and online or through Harmonic Arts!

Craft Kombucha (and Ferments) are The New Craft Beer

Kombucha has been a staple for most of the past decade. This year we’re going to see a new look in kombucha and in ferments...it’s going craft and its going local. In Vancouver, look out for Hoochy Booch and Oddity Kombucha. Looking to sample them all to see what fits your fancy?  August Market has over 15 kombuchas on tap. Squamish Water Kefir Co and Moonbrew Tonic Co are mixing up Kefir and Jun… Kombucha's lesser known cousins in the fermented beverage game. In the fermented food sector check out Pure Earth Superfoods

Podcasts Take Over The Waves

Podcasts have been around for sometime now, but this is the year they take over radio. The quality of content and diversity in podcasts has reached a tipping point where radio can’t keep up. Veganism, business, running, meditation… whatever your interest there are dozens of podcasts that cater to whatever you’re into. A few of our favourites; The Rich Roll Podcast, Finding Mastery, How I Built This, Masters of Scale, Serial, On Being and The Ezra Klein Show.
